These pieces were included in my recent exhibit, “Intimate Findings”, which was featured in the ARTSPLACE Gallery May 31-July 14 2025. It is a collection of brightly coloured, soft sculptures which are abstractly representative of intimate connection erroneously sought within the scope of sexuality.
"These pieces were constructed as I completed a life review in addiction recovery. As I review the years leading up to those first steps toward clarity, patterns arose in my rear view mirror. It’s only through a compassionate evaluation that I could allow the tales of former exploits to evolve into soft, figurative expressions of an almost comically copious copulative past- respectfully." The warm, vibrant colours, fluorescent pinks and oranges and deep reds illustrate physical longing and sensuality on a quilted stage, this is not a dissonant repent. Each piece represents a moment in my timeline, the energy of a relationship, brief or otherwise. The tangibility of heightened sensations - emotional and physical. Each piece was hand and machine sewn in a careful and organic way of shaping and molding fabric puzzle pieces together. The sculptures intuitively became a moment in time as well as a structure completely new and independent of premeditated definition. |

Rituals, Routines and Repetition: The Dark Muse
Rituals and routines offer comfort in busy chaos. Muscle memory takes the lead and our mind is left to wander and prepare itself for the day or solve a problem at hand. There comes a point, however when these habits contort themselves and turn a dark corner. Routine suddenly twists into a sick compulsion. A ritual becomes an obsession. A habit – an addiction. The three healthy reliables become dark sirens in the night. This is my piece. This piece currently can be seen in the group show Routines to Rituals at VANS until March 28, 2014, along with pieces by Chris Brobeck, Anna Horsnell-Wade, Anne Launcelott, Maritza Miari, and Barbara Schmeisser. Curated by Maritza Miari. http://www.visualarts.ns.ca/routines-to-rituals-curated-by-maritza-miari/ “The Dark Muse” 2014 Oil on Canvas 36” x 48” Lee Cripps |
